My Truck Build

Hi friends!

I wanted to show you the build I’ve been living in for the past two months. So far I’ve spent nights in Colorado and an entire month in the desert between Moab and Indian Creek, Utah. Next I’m on to Wyoming or California!!??!

I went with a 2017 Toyota Tundra, topped with a GFC Platform Topper Gen 2 XL. I wanted something that felt minimal, simple enough to feel spacious, with the ability to create a little home and feel safe, yet open enough to feel close to nature.

For sleep, I replaced the stock GFC mattress cushions with HEST set up that includes their wide + regular Foamy mattress, comforter, sheet set, and two camp pillows. This setup feels like a true bed, and the two mattresses allow me to sleep in the bed if I don’t want to pop up the tent or have a large bed that actually feels like a restful space for me!

The comforter is life-changing because it cinches like a normal sleeping bag at the bottom to keep in heat, the pillows are compact and zip into themselves to stay clean, the sheets are so cozy and easy to put on, and all of it pacts so well for easy storage. I’ll link all of the products I went with below!!

To explain a bit more in detail: The GFC has 4 panels; one stays in place, one can slide side to side, and then there are two square panels you can pop in and out to access the sleeping area from below. Their stock mattress is made up of cushions designed to fit perfectly over each of those panels. You can actually remove the square panels from the cushions to just have the platform without the stock mattresses. (I'll post a video soon to explain this better!)

The HEST mattress’s roll-out on top of that system. That means I have to fold one of them up to move the panel if I want to access my sleeping area from underneath. It’s a little extra shimmying, but 10000% worth it for solid sleep. I also have access to the bed from the side using a ladder.

And for everyone asking; yes, it still closes up the same way!

Inside the truck bed, I have a custom wood platform built by Colorado Camping Solutions. They designed it specifically for me; even down to measuring how much space I needed to sit cross-legged in the middle. It features a pull-out drawer system that includes a kitchen, pantry, and plenty of extra storage, with double access points and pull-up panels.

The top has two fully removable, weight-bearing drop-leafs, so I can sleep there or turn it into my office by sliding one of the boards into the center. On the left side, there’s a utility cabinet, my closet, a fridge, and more storage. They built that section slightly higher to give me extra room. *Thank you for that AJ!!!!

Update: HEST is also currently running their largest sale yet this year that is 25% off pretty much everything!

If you decide to go with any of my recommendations please purchase through my links as I receive commission!

Inside the cab, I did a full seat delete for space to put my climbing gear and general extra storage. Everything has a place, which makes living simply feel wayyy more spacious. Everything was specifically created for my truck, and I got the chance to watch the whole process of it coming together. They are wonderful people doing insanely rad mods!

So far, this rig has been a dream. If you’re in need of a new build, reach out to AJ at Colorado Camping Solutions and tell him I sent you!
